MeeWee My Ancestors A Walkabout Down My Memory Lane Collections
Artist Statement
My name is Alexandrina Fredricka Campbell, a proud Ngarrindjeri Memini (woman) from South Australia. My art is deeply rooted in my identity, my heritage, and the teachings passed down through generations of my family. I belong to the Ngarrindjeri Kullindjeri, Yarldari (Mangurupa, Turion, Wataltinyerar – dialects), and Ramindjeri clans, and my creative expression is a continuation of the cultural storytelling that has shaped my people for thousands of years. My grandmother, Amelia Stella Campbell, was born on Pt McLeay Mission (now Raukkan) in 1948, and her stories of growing up on Ngarrindjeri Ruwe (Country) are woven into my work. She, alongside my mother and great-grandmother, nurtured my understanding of our culture, lore, traditions, and spiritual connection to the land and waters. My name, given to me in honor of Lake Alexandrina, carries with it the memories, teachings, and love of my ancestors. These elements guide my artistic practice, allowing me to create fine art that not only reflects my personal journey but also preserves and shares the wisdom of my Ngarrindjeri identity. Art as Cultural Expression my paintings are an extension of my connection to Ruwe, our lands, waters, and all living things.
Through contemporary Ngarrindjeri fine art, I capture the stories, memories, and experiences passed down by my grandmother and elders. Each brushstroke carries the essence of our traditions, the spirit of MeeWee (the life force that connects all things), and the rhythms of the natural world. I work with high-quality acrylics and oils on canvas, ensuring that my creations reflect the depth and richness of my culture. Every original piece is varnished to protect and preserve its integrity, just as our traditions have been carefully maintained through generations. My reproduction prints, created using fine Giclée printing, offer an opportunity for collectors and admirers to experience Ngarrindjeri art in its finest form. Inspiration & Connection My grandmother’s teachings are at the heart of my work. She spoke of the importance of caring for Ruwe, of respecting the waterways that sustain life, and of listening to the whispers of Thulang.
Through my art, I honour these teachings by expressing the deep bond between Ngarrindjeri culture and the natural world. My paintings capture not just landscapes but the energy and spirit of our Country. The vibrant colours reflect the essence of MeeWee.. My art is a tribute to the guidance of my ancestors, a celebration of our cultural resilience, and an invitation for others to see the world through the eyes of a Ngarrindjeri Memini. Keeping Culture Alive Through Art For me, painting is more than a creative process; it is a responsibility. I carry forward the stories of my foremothers and forefathers, leaving my own unique imprint in the history of Ngarrindjeri art. Through my work, I ensure that our culture remains alive, visible, and respected. Each piece I create is an offering, a connection between past, present, and future generations. By sharing my art with the world, I invite others to engage with the beauty and depth of Ngarrindjeri culture.
Whether in traditional or contemporary settings, my fine art serves as a bridge between history and modernity, between my ancestors and the present. It is my way of caring for Ruwe, of honouring my grandmother’s legacy, and of ensuring that the spirit of Ngarrindjeri continues to thrive through creativity, storytelling, and cultural expression.
